Why Get An Organic Cotton Mattress?
Improve your health, have a better nights sleep, take care of our planet and your childrens future by using products made in Australia from quality Certified Organic Cotton.
The Organic Cotton Futon And Mattress
Why Should YOU Buy Organic Cotton Bedding?
It is 100% Natural. Cotton is a natural fibre that resonates harmoniously with our bodies. The same cannot be said for latex, foam and other synthetic fabrics, or even animal products such as wool. When we surround ourselves with organic cotton, we function – and sleep – at our optimum.
All Deluxe Futons and Innerspring Mattresses are manufactured with 100% certified organic cotton fabric and filling. Absolutely NO additives, chemicals, fire retardants, fumigation or any other potential harmful process are used!
A Much Healthier Product. Conventional cotton has been saturated with chemicals in the growing, picking and processing stages. These chemicals are poisonous to the human system and many of them release their gases, just by being exposed to the heat from our bodies.
Mattresses made with Certified Organic Material DO NOT Contain Harmful Chemicals. Conventional mattresses are made from synthetic materials which may be protected against fire by a range of substances such as ’Formaldehyde’ – a known carcinogen. They can be treated with other chemicals such as ‘Ultra fresh’, ‘Mould inhibitor’, ‘Anti dust-mite’, ‘moisture repellents’ and lavender, which for bedding is most likely synthetically produced. Even if it is natural you should try to avoid exposure because it is just another product which can interfere with your already low immune system.
Organic Cotton Smells Good. Sometimes when Organic cotton products are newly made the odour could be stronger than you anticipated, it is harmless and subsides.
Conventional mattresses made from latex, synthetic foam, memory foam, polyester, non-organic wool give off an odour – this is the odour of synthetic materials and chemicals – just like you will find in new cars, carpet and tyres. This may also be the case with, what is frequently referred to as ‘Natural Bedding’, as most of the filling used for these is part of a plant and most likely imported; the Australian Quarantine Inspection Service require fumigation for these imported plant products.
Many people do not even notice the smell because their senses have been damaged by the many synthetics which we breathe in every day. These odours subside over a period of time (in some instances it can take many years), but it never completely goes away. These chemicals found in synthetic materials, when heated by our body, cause the chemicals to outgas which we then inhale. They can also aggravate or cause hay fever, allergy and asthma like symptoms.
Organic cotton has a gentle natural odour which is harmless and subsides quickly.
Ideal for most Allergy, Chemical Sensitivity and Asthma Sufferers. Organic cotton is neutral, Hypoallergenic and the better alternative for those with Allergies, Chemical Sensitivity and Asthmatic tendencies.
They Breathe. Organic cotton mattresses have excellent wicking qualities, absorbing moisture at night and dissipating it by day, which in the case of the innerspring, is aided by the air circulation through the springs.
We strongly recommend you buy a natural timber slat base to use with your Organature Mattress or futon to further enhance the organic cotton’s natural qualities.
Common Questions About Organic Beds
What If I Spill Something On My Organic Mattress?
We always recommend that you use an Organature ‘Org-Suede Flannel’, machine washable mattress protector. These are really easy to fit and are designed exactly the same as a fitted sheet. If you require some extra protection our new Org-Fleece flat mattress protector placed under the fitted one would be a better option than one which has been plasticised; careful ‘Eucalypt’ protectors are classed as synthetic!
Our products are NOT plasticised or treated with moisture repellents, so you will need to take greater care with your certified organic mattress but the health benefits are well worth it.
Liquid spills should be ‘mopped up’ by sprinkling with bi-carbonate of soda, allow it to absorb the moisture, gently scrape with flat of knife and repeat if required. Finish with a damp cloth and then blow dry on both sides with a hair dryer, (make sure it’s not too hot or too close) or just air in the sun. If soiled, spot clean with bi-carbonate of soda and water, vinegar or lemon juice will aid to neutralise the stain.
How Should I Care For My Organic Mattress?
To minimize dustmite problems vacuum and air mattress approx. every three months when you are also turning the mattress, turning head to toe and next time flip over side to side.
Lots of people seem to think that they are allergic to dustmites; however dustmites have been around for a long, long time. 30 plus years ago people did not suffer with allergic reactions like we do now! These allergic reactions are caused by overload of the immune system and changing over to Certified organic beds and linen will help to improve that.
Remember, even if you manage to get rid of every dustmite in your bed, the next day they are back because they live in your clothing, furnishings, curtains and carpet. Bearing that in mind, if you are changing over to totally organic bed and bedding we suggest you do not waste your money on dustmite protectors. The use of dustmite protectors would not allow the mattress to breathe properly and this can add to more dustmites hiding in your nice moist warm bed.
Will My Innerspring Mattress Or Futon Lose Its Shape?
The organic cotton we use for the carded wadding, (teased out into fluffy pads) is very high quality. It is therefore “fluffier” than usual. This will give the innerspring a raised ‘puffed’ appearance towards the middle and initially you may find it soft, however the cotton will compress and this ‘puffed’ appearance will diminish as the mattress is used. It should be slept on for a few weeks and then turned over to settle. Regular turning and flipping over is recommended. The innerspring will at that stage be classed as medium firm towards firm and will appear level like any other innerspring mattress.
The futon is filled completely with this carded wadding and to avoid the cotton from moving when turned there is the ’buttoning’ effect which gives the futon the distinct futon look with the many dips. The futon is initially soft but will compress over a period of time and at that stage classed as firm; the time taken and the firmness depend on the weight of the person(s) and personal ‘feel’. A futon would not suit you if you prefer a nice flat mattress.
Are They Firm To Sleep On?
Cotton mattresses are typically firmer than synthetic ones. This is because unlike synthetic materials, cotton does not have “memory” and does not return as readily to its original shape.
Organic Cotton is better for your back and most people find them more comfortable too.
Is There A Warranty?
Absolutely. You can read more about that here.

Can I Use My New Organic Mattress On An Old Bed Base?
Please DO NOT USE imported timber and timber products (which are most likely fumigated) with your pure organic cotton mattress. We also DO NOT recommend the use of pine due to the high content of terpenes (turpentine). DO NOT use chipboard, MDF or plywood either, or you are decreasing the chances of experiencing the real HEALTH BENEFITS associated with purchasing a pure organic cotton mattress in the first place.
Please contact us directly if you feel you would like to have further information. We want you to be delighted with your purchase and we’re more than happy to guide you in the most suitable direction for you.
Are The Cot Mattresses Safe For Babies?
Yes. And we believe this cot mattress can also reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). The Organature® Cot Innerspring Organic Baby Mattress has a 100% Safety Record.
- For the best start possible, avoid using conventional bedding no matter how ‘natural’ the retailer claim it to be, unless it is certified organic to conform with Global Organic Textile Standards (GOTS).
- Don’t sleep them on conventional cots, cradles, trundles or beds that are imported from other countries or made from imported timber (all must be fumigated before arriving in the country).
- Beware of toxic glues, paints and finishes. They might not (noticeably) negatively effect an adult, but all these chemicals produce a gas that most of us get so accustomed to smelling, we forget it’s even there.
Organature® works to European Organic Standards, as Australian and U.S. certifications are not good enough for Peter, our founder, who for many years suffered severely from M.C.S. (Multiple Chemical Sensitivity). He now only produces and supplies products that are safe for his own use, and those he has fully researched. We go to enormous lengths to provide you with these genuinely cleaner, healthier, chemical free goods. It all comes from a very personal level. Read why in What Does Certification Really Mean.
Is It Really Healthier To Buy Organic Cotton Products?
Buying genuine, certified organic cotton products are one more step towards living in an eco-friendly world. The production of every certified organic product is strictly monitored during each phase, and the processes used are much more environmentally friendly than any other production method currently employed on the planet today.
Buying organic ensures a better chance for the long term health of our world by utilising sustainable farming practices, WITHOUT the use of unnecessary and allergy causing chemicals.
Your children will thank you for it!
Safe For Chemical Sensitivity, Asthma, Eczema and Allergy Sufferers
The Only Organic Cotton Mattress Made in Australia
Organature is the ONLY manufacturer producing genuine organic cotton innerspring mattresses and futons in Australia. Everything we make and use has been thoughtfully chosen with Chemical Sensitivity, Asthma and Allergy Sufferers in mind, right down to the packaging.
PLEASE NOTE: Some people are so Chemically Sensitive that they will need to air their organic cotton products longer. Samples of the fabric and filling are available upon request but please note that samples may have been aired for some time and may not reflect the final product.
Why Do We Make Organic Products?
One of our founders, Peter, was diagnosed with Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) in 1993. He was forced to give up work as a result. There is no total cure for this strange ailment which can strike anyone at any time. Read more about MCS, Multiple Chemical Sensitivity HERE.
When we were researching MCS we discovered that many people are already allergic to common household products such as perfume deodorant, soap powders and more (due to the chemicals they contain), and can feel tired, experience difficulty breathing, have asthma like attacks and get rashes or other allergic reactions, some without even realising the cause!
Treatment for Chemical Sensitivity – At this time, the only recognised remedy and precaution for Chemical Sensitivity is the ‘Avoidance of Chemicals’. As a chemical sensitivity or asthma sufferer, it is vital to get a good night’s rest without the effects of chemicals. Avoiding the traditional bedding products including sheets, pillows and bed linen which are often treated with potentially allergy aggravating, (and often causing), chemicals), is really important in helping you FEEL BETTER.
Why Is Regular Bedding And Bed Linen Bad For Us? – Conventional cotton bedding and bedlinen often contain chemicals such as formaldehyde to make them ‘Non-iron’, ‘Easy care’, ‘Wrinkle free’, ‘ Permanently pressed’, ‘Flame proof’ and many other fancy names. With polyester/cotton the chemical outgassing from polyester adds to the harm.
Feeling Better By Using Organic Products – To minimise exposure to the harmful chemicals that were making Peter so sick *that he couldn’t work and could barely even get out of bed, we use ONLY Organic products in our home (with special emphasis on what we sleep on and under), and have witnessed massive improvements in Peters’ health, due to these changes. * (proven in 2000 by blind and double blind testing to have come from the outgassing of the chemicals in his family conventional bedding and bedlinen manufacturing factory).
Organature was created because there was no Bedding Manufacturer using clean and safe Organic practices in Australia. Research also showed there were many other Australians with symptoms like Peter’s caused by similar reactions to chemicals, so we decided to make, supply, import where necessary and deliver the range of Organic Cotton Goods that people were desperately needing to regain their health.
Only Safe Organic Products and Packaging Are Used
All Organature bedlinen and other bedding products are made in Australia in our own sewing rooms under strict clean conditions. Our requirements to supply HEALTHY PRODUCTS to the public which are NOT contaminated by outgassing from other products, are * more strict than organic certification requirements.
*Our manufacturing area, sewing room and showroom walls are painted with natural organic paint, the suspended ceiling is hardwood frame with organic cotton calico, and the cutting table is Australian hardwood. (We DO NOT use chipboard or MDF). We are predominantly a family business and none of us use synthetic fragrances from perfumes, deodorants, aftershave to hand creams, personal care products etc.
We follow the European Organic certification standard which is more stringent and health promoting. We don’t use the American standard because it allows certain chemicals to be used in fabrics, like OB fabric whiteners, which are not allowed in Europe.
We control all aspects of the fabric supply and import, the products we manufacture ourselves and those we have made especially for us under strictly controlled contract, without contamination from outside sources. Our mattresses, doonas, quilt covers and pillows are filled with Clean Certified Organic Cotton and comply with very strict organic specifications.
About Our Packaging Materials
An Organature innerspring mattress or futon mattress is first packed in a handy draw string bag made especially from our organic cotton calico fabric and then meticulously wrapped in one layer of thick plastic and finally in a carton for outside Melbourne and interstate transport.
This gives extra protection between the mattresses and the outer wrapping. All of our other bedding and bedlinen products are packed in either an organic cotton calico bag or true cellulose film and mostly in a carton for transport …because we care that you receive your new mattress, bedding, futon, sheets, pillows, towels, clothes or any other organic products we sell, in the best possible condition.
Organature offer the BEST CERTIFIED ORGANIC QUALITY and at a very REASONABLE PRICE.
We hope our products will improve the quality of your life.

The Mattress & Your Health
Organic cotton mattresses and futons breathe which helps eliminate moisture retention and allows the mattress to remain dry or to dry quickly thus avoiding mould or mildew. This ‘breathing’, together with the soft Suede Flannel fabric also reduces dust mite problems (these annoying and allergy causing little creatures prefer warm, moist conditions). The mattress retains its clean natural state, allowing skin to breathe which encourages a deeper and more restful night’s sleep.
The Innerspring Mattress
Layers of carded cotton wadding are placed all over and on each side of the innerspring mattress. Many of these layers are used in the futon too which creates firm and healthy support for your back.
Inside the mattress is a ‘Bonnel’ hourglass spring which has been covered with Organature exclusive ‘Org-Suede Flannel’ certified organic cotton fabric. The fabric on the springs is then generously covered with many layers of soft Certified Organic Cotton wadding and encased in the ‘Org-Suede Flannel’, creating a medium firm – firm yet comfortable mattress for a healthy and relaxing night’s sleep.
Mattresses, mattress protectors, futons and futon covers come in a range of sizes to suit every member of the family. From the large king and queen sized beds to the smallest bassinet and cot size futons, and everything in between. Special sizes may also be ordered by request.

The Mattress OR Futon Base
To allow for proper breathing of any mattress they should always be placed on a slat base.
Organature futon and innerspring mattress bases are supplied in a convenient flat pack which is very easy to assemble. Some take less than 5 minutes to set up completely – no nails no screws, no glue, no tools required. Others can take between 15-20 minutes to assemble, screws/bolts and tool required are provided. The wooden bed base is available in the raw state, not varnished or painted, to help those with Chemical Sensitivities and allergies.
Due to a high number of customer requests, we now offer the option of buying all our natural Australian plantation hardwood beds, bed bases and cots already sealed with an organic, low-allergenic natural plant and mineral based oil; available in clear and several colour semi-transparent colours. Should you wish to have more information about these oils or would prefer to do the oiling yourself or perhaps wish to paint it with a natural non-petrochemical paint contact www.Livos.com.au to view their available products and colours and do not hesitate to come back to us for further assistance; we can supply you with the full Livos range of products.
The slats themselves are not and should not be oiled, varnished or painted.
For increased effectiveness of the health benefits gained when using certified organic products on a daily basis, we strongly recommend that you buy our natural timber slat bed base in conjunction with your organic cotton mattress or futon, which has been custom made from Australian plantation hardwood.
No fumigation processes have taken place, minimal amount of special glue is used; this particular glue dries rockhard in about 10 minutes and because it is sandwiched between the timbers no outgassing is taking place.
WARNING – Please DO NOT USE imported timber and timber products with your pure organic mattress or futon. These are most likely fumigated. Also note that most locally produced timber products are pine and are finished with petro-chemical based varnish or paint. We also DO NOT recommend the use of pine due to the high content of terpenes (turpentine). DO NOT use chipboard, MDF or plywood either or you are decreasing the chances of experiencing the real HEALTH BENEFITS associated with purchasing a pure organic cotton mattress or futon.
